Birds we saw on our walk Thursday: Dad and I took a different walking route, by the side of the temple on Vista Hermosa, across the pasarela (overpass) and into neighbourhoods that have a lot of big-rise construction. We found ourselves on a corner with unusual-to-us birds. The black ones are everywhere, as well as brown birds that walk with their beaks in the air --- as if waiting for a drink or a good bug to drop in. |
These green hummingbirds come through the backyard regularly looking for food. I took away one of the major attractions when I pruned our two fuchsia plants back to an inch or two from the potting soil. The plants were infested with little white flies that lay eggs profusely on the fuchsia leaves. I've tried dishwashing liquid to control them without luck so far. I was going to just toss the plants, but the flowers are pretty and I read about how to revitalise the whole plant. So, more soap for any unwary flies, and rejuvenation time for the plants and flowers. |
Current Events: Dad and I tried a new restaurant for lunch after our shift on Tuesday. It's a five-minute walk from here. The food is good, though not special, but the outdoor setting is gorgeous. We also bought some funny google-eyed cookies to bring back to our neighbouring missionaries...similar to these: We have a new apartment neighbor. Sister Lowery, the 62-yr-old new nurse for the CCM (MTC), moved into the apartment next door on our right - the one vacated by the Eberhards. Sister Burk assigned me to gather supplies to start her in her new mission. All week fellow missionaries have been bringing us bags of food and paper goods. President Cox of the MTC took her shopping the same day she arrived, but this start-up is our custom. It takes care of any needs when a missionary moves in. She left us a candy thank you. (I might be exaggerating the amount we collected just a little.) Family photo corner: |
Last night I worked with our little temple angel, Sister Tanner. to learn the last of the initiatory ordinance. I've been memorizing it, but it would be much easier in English. Sister Bingham, a local humanitarian missionary with just two weeks left, worked with us. I overheard Sister Burk and others "rejoicing" that I can now perform the entire ordinance. Dad tells me that as I get more proficient, the words will roll out and I will relax. I actually had a wonderful time and came home less tired than some days. It was raining this morning when I got up and I got this photo of the geraniums in a basket outside our back door. | Would you believe it, it's only five weeks to summer closure of the temple. Dad and Eric are diligently planning their hike, plus we have a day at Lake Atitlan. More to come on that. |
